V-belt drives
The name is derived from the wedge-shaped cross-section of the belt. The power is transmitted by the frictional force developed between the belt and the pulley. Wedge V-belt drives are available with single and multiple grooves. In the case of wedge V-belt drives with multiple grooves they are sometimes connected to each other using a cover plate on the rear, so-called “power-belt”. V-belts can further be categorized based on their width and height ratio and on their belt profile: normal and narrow.
Flat-belt drives
The flat-belt drive is the oldest type of drive. It is considered the classic “transmission drive”. This drive mistakenly does no longer get the attention which it deserves, because for certain applications it is still the optimum solution from both a technical and economic point of view. Especially at high speeds (150 .. 200 m/s) this drive is capable of transmitting a great deal of power (80 .. 230 kW), making it a very suitable for certain applications for example for machinery in the textile and paper industries.
Timing-belt drives
Contrary to V-belt drives, timing belts are synchronous drives. The rotation is transmitted in an angle-synchronous way. This is why the official name of this belt is “synchronous belt”. Power is transmitted when the teeth on the belt (positioned in regular distances to each other) fit in the corresponding openings on the pulley. Most timing belts are made of rubber filled with tensile cords made of glass fibre or steel.
The Stemin Breitbach range of timing belt drives includes: SilentSync (EAGLE-Pd) [8M-14M], FALCON-Pd [8M-14M], TOPDRIVE HTD & MUSTANG SPEED & MUSTANG TORQUE [3M-5M-8M-14M], HPPD-PLUS [3M-5M-14M-20M], STS [S3M-S4.5M-S5M-S8M-S14M] und Zöllig (Inch) [MXL-XL-L-H-XH-XXH].
Polyurethane-belt drives
PU timing-belts made of high-quality polyurethane elastomers are used for the transmission of high power and torques and as synchronously operating conveying elements.
The ELATECH toothed belts are manufactured in four different designs:
- ELATECH M&V metre goods – for linear drives or as basic materials for endless welded belts used in conveying equipment;
- ELA flex SD – endless extruded belts for power transmission;
- ELATECH iSync – endless belts manufactured from round shapes for power transmission;
- ELATECH Syncro Max – with these belts the advantages of synchronously running toothed belts are now available for the width range where module belts or classic conveyor belts would otherwise be used.
For conveying equipment there are many different types of coating as well as special solutions in the form of EMF quick-acting couplings or EFT cam screw connections.
The variety of available belt profiles is impressive. There are metric (T2.5 to AT20) and imperial (inch) trapezoidal profiles (XL to XH) as well as HTD, STD and RTD arched profiles as well as the SilentSync (EAGLE Pd) 5M, 8M, 10M and 14M arrow-shaped toothed profile.
There are additionally several flat belt variants for pure lifting applications without synchronisation.
Further information can be found in the ELATECH complete catalogue and in the EAGLE PU belt brochure.
Poly-V drives
Poly-V drives have power transmission capabilities up to 600 kW. This type of belt consists of a base material filled with “tensile members”. The belts are available in the following profiles: H, J, K, L, and M. The V-grooves of the belt fill up the V-grooves of the pulley and transmit the power by means of friction. Poly-V drives are almost free of vibrations and, as a result, produce hardly any noise. This drive can be fitted with inside and outside idlers. A transmission ratio of i = 40 is possible.
